The Central Ontario Healthcare Procurement Alliance (COHPA) is a shared service healthcare organization providing source to pay services for a group of affiliated hospitals. We are advertising for a Manager, Environmental Services on behalf of one of these hospitals - Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Ontario. Interested candidates should note that COHPA is in the process of finalizing an agreement with Plexxus ( to become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Plexxus. As such representatives from Plexxus and Ross Memorial will be involved in the recruitment and hiring process. Ross Memorial Hospital is an active, acute-care community hospital serving more than 80,000 residents and seasonal visitors to the Kawartha Lakes region. The hospital’s acute and continuing care services include emergency services, restorative senior care programs, dialysis treatment facilities, orthopedics and mental health programs. 

Key Responsibilities:
The Manager, Environmental Services will be based on site at Ross Memorial Hospital and will be responsible for the following:

  • Plans, organizes and directs the activities of Environmental Services, including participating in the preparation of the annual operating budget and capital budget for Environmental Services and provides appropriate reports to the Director.
  • Develops and implements goals and objectives for Environmental Services in conjunction with the Director.
  • Develops and maintains policies, procedures and work standards and ensures that they are adhered to.
  • Collaborates with the Infection Control to ensure all Environmental services meet Infection Control standards.
  • Manages the Waste/Recycling functions including disposal of biomedical material.
  • Ensures all activities within Housekeeping are in accordance with relevant legislation and regulations (i.e. MOEE, Infection Control, APIC, Public Health).
  • Ensures department facilities and equipment are maintained and operated properly.
  • Manages Environmental project planning.
  • Manages, maintains and schedules portering services supplied by the Environmental Services staff.
  • People resource management, including authorizing work schedules and payroll; managing employee and labour relations issues, in consultation with the appropriate HR/Labour Relations Consultant, as required; selects, orients, and trains staff, in accordance with hospital policy and/or the provisions of the collective agreement; performance and attendance management; and employee communications
  • Provides leadership, guidance and support to staff and a wide variety of clients on Housekeeping practices.
  • Responds to and resolves client and staff complaints and/or concerns in a timely manner.
  • Participates in Health & Safety training as required.
  • Participates on Committees as assigned.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends affecting Environmental Services by demonstrating commitment to continued education and self-development.
  • Manages the inventory for Environmental supplies
  • Minimizes risks to staff, patients and visitors through ensuring adequate staff safety orientation and education (fire, back care, W.H.M.I.S. etc.), management of hazards and incident investigation and follow-up. 

Essential Qualifications:

  • Member in good standing with the Ontario Healthcare Housekeeping Association.
  • Minimum of 3 years recent experience as a Housekeeping Supervisor in a hospital setting within a unionized environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the scheduling, training and performance management of staff
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to analyse and interpret financial data
  • Planning, organizing and effective time management skills
  • A high degree of professionalism along with personal and professional integrity
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and co-operatively with all levels of staff, patients and the public. 

Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent customer relationship management skills Proven ability to manage and coach team members Previous experience working in a unionized environment 

Education Requirements:
Bachelor of Management degree, or equivalent Housekeeping related O.H.A. /C.H.A. courses, Executive Housekeeper, OHHA courses.
